The Directorate for Research and Development of Federal Polytechnic Ekowe was established from inception of the Polytechnic as an integral part of the academic planning system. It was formerly under the Academic Planning Division of the Polytechnic before it was carved out as a standalone directorate by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). It was set up to position the Polytechnic on a path that will birth innovative ideas, produce and showcase quality innovations that will contribute to development, knowledge exchange and advancement especially, in science & technology, engineering, skills and entrepreneurship for nation building. The Research and Development Directorate oversees research activities in the Polytechnic and ensures quality assurance in both students and staff research activities and also, drives development and innovation contents in the research processes and outputs.
The Directorate is an administrative office for research and development which started functioning from the year 2018 with Dr. Olusegun A. Kuforiji as the pioneer director during the Rectorship of Dr. Enetimi I. Seiyaboh who was the second substantive Rector of the Polytechnic. The directorate is currently headed by Dr. Blessing C. Okogbue, a Chief lecturer in the department of Oceanography and Fisheries Science under the leadership of Dr. Agbabiaka Lukman Adegoke as the current substantive Rector. The director has initiated training workshops in research conduct, current research tools, artificial intelligence in researching and technical report writing to properly document and publish research findings.
To run a system that will drive research activities that will motivate staff and students to contribute to cutting edge innovations, development and visibility of the Polytechnic as well as support academic departments to produce graduates with well-developed skills and entrepreneurial mindset via quality assured research processes for global competitiveness.
