Description: The Banded jewelfish or five-spot cichlid, is a freshwater fish species in the cichlid family, native to West Africa. This fish is notable for its vibrant yellow-green body, marked by five distinctive black spots along its sides, which become more pronounced as the fish matures. In older specimens, scales often have a brick-red center, adding to their striking appearance. Known for its aggressive temperament, the banded jewelfish is often territorial, especially in confined spaces like aquariums. These fish prefer large tanks with plenty of hiding spots, as their aggressive nature can make cohabitation challenging, especially as they grow. In the wild, they inhabit a variety of freshwater environments across Africa, from rivers and lakes to the Nile Basin and Lake Chad, as well as the upper Zambezi region.
