Description: The Nile Bichir is a prehistoric-looking fish with a long, eel-like body and a dark grayish coloration. It has a distinctively elongated lower jaw that extends beyond the upper jaw and features 14-18 dorsal spines along its back. Typically reaching lengths of up to 68 cm (27 inches), this species is native to Africa, specifically found in the Nile River and surrounding river basins, such as the Omo River and Lake Chad. Polypterus bichir is a facultative air-breather, allowing it to survive in low-oxygen environments by absorbing oxygen directly from the air.
